Check what you are charging for the eco-contribution

The rate went to €1.50 a night on 1 July 2026 and the ceiling on one visit went to €22.50. It had been 50c a night capped at €5 for about a decade, so a figure set once and left alone is now short, and the shortfall is the licence holder's to pay.

The old rate had stood for about a decade, which is long enough that most operators set the charge once and have not looked at it since. If you have not checked yours since June, this is what to check it against.

The ceiling divides exactly, so it bites on the 15th night and never part way through one. A guest who stays 15 nights or more now reaches €22.50, where the same guest used to reach €5. That is €17.50 for every adult in the party, on one stay, and it is the licence holder who owes it whether or not it was collected at the door.

Two other things make the number higher than an operator expects. It is charged for every night the place is made available, whether or not the guest turns up. And everybody counts as an adult unless documentary evidence says otherwise, so an unrecorded child is charged for. It also has to be shown separately on the fiscal receipt, because it is not part of what the guest is paying for the accommodation.

If somebody else has been collecting it

The guidelines say twice that the responsibility and liability cannot be shifted or delegated, and that they remain at all times on the licence holder. A licence holder may hand the collecting and the paying over to an operator registered with the MTA, and that only counts if formal notification reached the Authority first. A manager who has been doing this for an owner without that notification has left the owner carrying all of it.
